Fake land mine museum scamCountry forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Cambodia
A Tuk Tuk driver may claim to take you to the landmine museum, but instead take you to the "War Remnant Museum Cambodia." This is different than the war museum or landmine museum. It is just north of the Angkor Archaeological Park ticket office, down a short dirt road (much closer to town than the actual landmine museum) The price is $8 per person, and as of 2/2/16 the museum was only partially completed and lacking in presentation. If the price is wrong, or the location seems too close, call out the driver and get them to take you to the official museum. When arriving at the museum that does not have the right name or location, ask your driver to take your originally agreed upon destination.
Is it a scam if the driver misunderstands you? Or if the cover does not know about a particular place? You need to be clear about these issues before 'calling out' anyone. | 1
Hello Emmeff, there was absolutely no misunderstanding between me and the driver; I clearly said Landmine Museum and explained him where to go: I showed it to him on a map and Lonely Planet as well! Besides the fact the Landmine Museum is a very popular museum in Siem Reap. I have done some researching and found out that my driver, called Vanaa, is actually working for this museum; he is also on the pictures of the website of this museum. Definitely a scam. | 2
Well good for you Karen. We need more reports like this. | 3
I have just opened the website. All the signs seem to be in Vietnamese. | 4
My driver was very persistent, so yes, I did go in. The place is sealed of by metal plates so from the outside I couldn't look inside this place. I have found the final proof of this, that my driver is actually working for this museum: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g297390-c174988/Siem-Reap:Cambodia:Siem.Reap.Drivers.html Website of the War Remnant Museum I hope I helped a lot of fellow travellers! | 5
Karen, thanks for the info. Hopefully the LP authors will take note of this and include the info in their next edition. Perhaps one piece of info could be of additional help: How did you come across the man? There are hundreds of tuktuks in Siem Reap and it seems odd that you came across this guy. I suspect he targeted you in some way. If you add some detail to your valuable report I trust it will be of even greater assistance to others. Again thanks! | 6
Dear Karen_0 We’re sorry to hear about you’re recent experience. We briefly had had a Tuk Tuk driver fitting your description working at the museum. The War Remnant Museum no longer has an association with this individual. | 7
