extended stay in accra and traveling alone in ghana?

Country forums / Africa / Ghana

i just arrived in accra to do research for my thesis... my fellowship put me up in a hotel. so far i think i'm the only guest here. does anyone have suggestions of places to go at night? i've been to osu a couple times but i'm still kind of overwhelmed and don't know my way around. i also want to travel around ghana but don't know where i'd start. should have bought the guidebook! let me know if any normal people are in accra between now and november! it would be great having someone to explore with.

You're not interested in meeting abnormal people? That'll rule me out.....but really, if you can't find a guidebook you can at least buy one on-line from LP: the Ghana chapter of the West Africa guide can be had as a .pdf for $4.95. Do it someplace with printing and a fast-ish connection, like Speedy Internet.

Otherwise, go where the other tourists go and look around. Everyone you see has their nose in an LP guide, right? Walk right up and ask to have a look. Make friends and ask to photocopy the relevant bits. Meet someone who's on their way home and arrange to buy their guidebook from them. Etc.

Hope that's helpful.

I'm with you Markhauf, no point meeting me if your normal!

There's a local guidebook called "Ghana" which is available in all of the supermarkets (Maxmart, Shoprite, Koala) and which is pretty good if a little haphazard in its layout. There's also a new edition of Time Out Accra which will help you on places to go in Accra.

What sort of things are you interested in? Give me a bit more of a steer and I'll try and point you in the right direction.

Hello,

To start with let’s talk about somewhere to stay. I would suggest Legassi Gardens if you are doing an extended stay in Accra. They are located on the north end of town in an area called Pokoase which is a little quieter and less city like; there is a commuter train that you can catch to get into town without having to deal with the traffic. They are more of an apartment so longer stays are better. On site is a beautiful garden and Vegetarian restaurant their website is here http://www.legassigardens.com/ .

As for a guide book I would suggest the Bradt guide it is by far the most comprehensive but there are still short comings.

As far as more information about what to do and where to go please check out my website www.greenbugadventures.com every day I get more travel information about Ghana up on the page. Take a look at my tours and see what is available to see in Ghana. If you decide you want transportation or a Guide just send me an email and I would be happy to help you. I would love to discuss with you about what kind of travel interest you have and I am sure I can direct you to some great places if you are more into independent travel. Right now I am just trying to get the Green Bug Adventures name out so feel free to email me I won’t push a sale. Greenbugafrica@gmail.com .

Good luck,
Leif

Best Ghana guidebook is from godwin yidana and gayle pescud. You can check it out here: http://gisforghana.blogspot.com/p/insiders-guide-book-to-ghana.html It's $7.90 to download the pdf. Much better than anything from lonely planet and bradt. Godwin is Ghanaian and Gayle has been living in the country for years. They have excellent suggestions. Here is one piece of advice to get on right away, go to couchsurfing.org and do a search for people in Accra. Even if you don't need a place to stay you can connect with someone and have them show you around or you can find CS groups for Accra and see where events are happening and what's going on around town. CS is my number one resource for Ghana or anywhere. Also, if you need any contacts feel free to get in touch with me at phil dot paoletta @ gmail dot com What kinds of things are you interested in? Music? Dancing? Beaches? Languages? Forests? History?

Hi Just wanted to echo Phil's comment about couchsurfing I have just joined after staying in Accra twice on business and not really getting the opportunity to meet people. I will be there 27th Sept to Nov 2nd so if you fancy a coffee let me know! I'm a stranger in Accra too! If I come across any really great places I'll let you know :-)
