euro of dollar?

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Myanmar

Euro banknotes can be exchanged easily?
Or is better to use the dollar banknotes?

Dollars are more popular When we were there, paid for entrance fee 1 dollar = 1 Euro so dollar is better for shopping, if you change to Kayt they like new dollars.

They can be changed at airports and larger cities. US$s (new condition) are more widely accepted and can be used to pay for Hotels, flights, trains. Kyats are more widely used now than a few years ago. If you can change Euros into US$s at good rates then its a good idea to have some. Maybe the rates are slightly better for US$s, I have found that in some Asian countries.

Everything can be paid for with Kyat now, so you only need a currency to buy your Kyat with....Euro and $US are both widely accepted at official changers (as is Singapore $)....so it depends more on what you countries currency is...ie. if not $US then you loose a bit buying US first, so if your currency is Euro then that is your best bet.
Euro can't be used to pay for accommodation or anything else, but as mentioned, everything can be paid for with Kyat anyway.

EUR is easier in my opinion.

  1. Euro banknotes are generally in much better condition than US dollars. Pretty much every ATM in Eurozone will give you pristine bills. No folds or something, which is a weird obsession for exchange offices in Myanmar.
  2. There's no "We only accept dollar bills issued after 2006" or something like that. Unlike with USD, all EUR banknotes are accepted.

I would bring much more EUR next time and less USD. And pay everything in Kyat.

also many posts suggest that Euro notes don't have to be in as pristine condition as $US notes do...
