Essential Laos Tour

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Laos

Hi All,

I am looking at heading to Laos but I only have a couple of weeks to see as much as possible. For this reason I have been looking at trying to find a tour that can take me to all the highlights without having everything each day planned for me and without being on a huge tour bus.
I have come across this tour which is a special offer and seems like great value including major stops along the way:

Can anyone tell me whether this does include a good itinerary for a short visit?

Thank you

The itinerary is...pretty standard I guess.Too fast for me..too little time in some places.

Anyway..if you want, you can do all that easily enough yourself, and at a much lower price than that.....

Seems pretty pointless apart from the driver, you can cover all that on a bus. 2 days in Champasak? Why not just fly to LP and then head south?

For me, it misses out one of the highlights of Laos - Plain of Jars.
Champasak/Wat Phu is great and underrated, but in two weeks you can't see everything. i presume you're someone who likes to pack a lot in, rather than take their time (I'm more towards the latter group)

I think you have three choices -

1/do this tour and you will see a lot of Laos, including the south.
2/ stick to the north, and do PoJ. This can easily be done DIY
3/ It would mean some very long bus journeys, but if you cut out Vang Vieng, you could do LP, PoJ, Vientaine, night bus to Pakse, Champasak/4,000 islands DIY in 2 weeks. Of course you could cut down on bus journeys if you took a flight or two.

Honestly I think you could skip Vientiane. A bit boring. I did notice that there were flights that arrived in the morning and then flights that left at 1700 so you could just do a quick day trip in the city then head out. Definitely check out Plains of Jars, and spend 3-4 days in LP. I didn't make it to Pakse, etc as I only had 10 days and wish I spent 2 of the days in Pakse.

As said above it is very easy to do all this by yourself and at a far lower cost. In these days of widespread global tourism and plenty internet info resources there really isn't any need for guided tours.

Laos is a big country with long travel times between places. In a couple of weeks you should just stick to the north - see Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang & Plain of Jars. This is plenty. If you have a few says left over you could visit Nong Khiaw &/or Muang Ngoi as a side trip from LP.
