Country forums / UK & Ireland / Ireland

I am a US citizen that also has dual citizenship in Ireland does anyone know the documentation I need to get a job there (i plan on being there next summer) and how i do i obtain these documents?

With dual citizenship, that is having an Irish passport (?), you don't need any further documentation apart from qualifications for the job. Just swan in and be merry...

If you are looking for a summer job though be aware that you'll have loads of competition in non-qualified jobs, like in pubs or such like. Best thing is to apply in situ. At least you have the advantage to speak English. If you are looking for a qualified job I doubt that anyone is prepared to employ you for summer only.

Everything else you'll find out on www.citizensinformation.ie<BR>

Thanks! Oh, I don't have a predetermined amount of time I plan to stay, I am graduating with a major in Hotel Management so I am open to the amount of time they need me. Yet, I am still in the process of getting my Irish passport, so is there anything else besides that? In case I don't have it in time?
thanks :)

I assumed the OP was talking about a social security number (or whatever they are called in Ireland) and a bank account?? Along the lines of those kinds of documents???

3

Yes, exactly. I need to figure out what types of things "paper-wise" will make me readily available to work in Ireland.

If you have an Irish passport, all you need is a PPS number, the Irish equivalent of your Social Security number. So far as I know you can only get this in person, you can't apply in advance, but it can be sorted out very quickly when you arrive.

Lots of information on the Citizens Information website.

You need a PPS number as said above, and you will need set up an irish bank account. I don't think there's anything else you'll need. When you first start working, you'll be on emergency tax, which completly robs you blind, but you'll be able to claim it back. But make sure that you have all your tax documents in order for your employer when you start!

Just to get back to basics, you're either an Irish citizen or you aren't. Assuming you have applied for Irish citizenship based on your heritage, you will not be an Irish citizen for practical purposes until the passport is issued. There is no halfway house on this one, as I understand it. It is probably stretching the truth to say that you are an Irish citizen if you haven't got the passport yet...at best, you are eligible for Irish citizenship.

If you don't have your Irish passport by the time you come here, you will not enjoy the rights of Irish and EU citizens. If you have it, you will.

Bridget you could also ring on eof the Irish embassies/consulates in the USA. There are loads in Florida, Washington, New York, etc. Good luck with everything!

8

With an Irish passport you are also eligible to live and work anywhere in the EU
