Driving Mozambique -South to North

Country forums / Africa / Mozambique

Hi All,

We are looking to travel up the entire coast of Mozambique early next. Hoping to get at least 5 weeks off work but more if needed! We'll be traveling in a 4x4 and are quite familiar with Moz travel, potholes, triangles, bribes etc.

We have travelled countless times in the south, as far as Vilanculos but no further, does anyone have any suggestions/avoidances?? I've heard to miss Beira all together? The main idea is to travel up as far as possible, even into Tanzania. But the main aim is to get to Isla de Mozambique and Pemba.

Does anyone know if the road is accessible the whole way up, would love to chat to someone who had travelled this route.

Thanks!
Mandy

You should visit Beira, an interesting city with nice beaches, old buildings from the days of the Portugueses, lots of nice restaurants. Beira is probabely the most interesting place in the region of Sofala. Remember also to visit Gorongosa National Parque in the inland of Sofale. There is also a nice beach resort called Rio Savana, one hour drive north of Beira.

My fella and I are looking to make the journey from J'Burg up through Mozambique by road. Any advice you have would be welcomed? Can we do this in a normal car or do we need 4x4? Time scales to do it? Cost of petrol? Any other info would be appreciated.

Cheers

If you stick to the main road a normal car will do.
