Dresden China

Country forums / Western Europe / Germany

I'm coming to Germany in May and am wanting to bring something special home for my mum. I'd be keen to get my hands on some genuine China/Porcelain from Dresden as she's talked about it a bit before. You can't even buy it in Australia, so is it still available in Germany anywhere? Does it go by a different name cause I've had a lot of trouble finding any info on it. I'd appreciate any info including the best place to get it from (without getting ripped off) and how much I'm looking at paying for it... Thanks for your help!

Here's the website of the manufactory in Dresden: click here.

Another place in Saxony, with an even longer china/porcelain tradition (I think) is Meißen. Here's the link to their website: Meißen.

Both manufactories have shops and might be worth having a look at, if you are in the area. Though their products will be available almost everywhere in Germany. The Meißen website has a store locator on its Website, though it is only in German (click on "Händler in Ihrer Nähe").

Hope this helps for a start.

I suppose it's Meißen your mother is talking about because that's the famous brand.
The factory and museum in Meißen can be visited, so if you're going to Dresden, Meißen with its cathedral and palace and the china manufactory would make a nice day trip.

In Germany it is only known as Meissner Porzelan. Not sure why it's Dresden everywhere else in the world. Anyway, Meißen is where the porcelain has been made for decades. You can go on a tour in the factory and they will show you that's it's still all hand made and hand painted, that's part of why it's so expensive. You can buy the porcelain there or most of the big hotels will have shops in their lobby that will sell it too. If you buy Meissen porcelain anywhere but the manufactury, make sure it has the two blue swords on the bottom, that's been their trademark since the very beginning.
