Dont like set itineraries...want a flexible self drive...help pleaseCountry forums / Africa / Namibia
Hello, I am arriving in Windhoek March 2 and hope to drive around Namibia with my 2 other friends for 2 weeks. Usually, I am an arrive there and play it by ear type of traveler. I like to have flexibility and if I like a place, stay for a day or two extra, etc. My question is, how feasible is this in Namibia? I know I have to book campsites for Etosha ahead of time in Windhoek, etc, but I also after Etosha want to be able to go to another city and stay for a tbd time, etc. A few of the hostel travel agencies I asked about car hire etc tried to tell me I have to pay for a car/camp/have a set itinerary for all 14 days, as well as pay by person and not a set rate for the car ( I am not a fan)... I would like to hear otherwise from honest travelers. Thanks!
Sounds very odd to me. I've never had to have a set itinerary or had to pay pp. Just keep looking for another rental agency. You might have to go with one of the big rental agencies like avis etc. Look online for consolidators who might give you a better rate than direct. In March, play it by ear works great. It was very quiet there last March. I just turned up and found a place to camp without a problem in every single place. But book for Etosha and Sesriem when you know your dates... just in case. | 1
I always hire a car (I use rentalcargroup.com) and arrange my own routes and accommodation. You don't need a hostel travel agency to arrange your holiday if you are used to travelling and are flexible. That said I did use Cardboard Box to book me Etosha when the Nat Parks people were not replying 2 years ago. Don't let them railroad you into booking something you don't need. Enjoy Namibia - it's fantastic. | 2
