Does it worth it? hostel in ViennaCountry forums / Western Europe / Austria
Hello all, My flight to Canada (through Frankfurt) is leaving at 7 AM The hostels we looked at ARE close to a train station (Wien Westbahnhof), but from what I've found, the first bus leaving from there to the airport is at 5AM and it takes 45 min. I would like to be at the airport a bit before that to be confrotable (if, for eg., I miss the bus, then I still have time to make it there) There is buses running 24h, but they're leaving from Wien Mitte, which is on the other side of the city. I don't know how I can get there supper early?? If if takes me 1h to get to the airport and I need to wake up at 4am, not sure it worth it to pay for a hostel bed... So, I missing some details to make a decision, anybody can tell me if I got the details right? Any thoughts?
Bus schedule from Schwedenplatz: http://www.oebb.at/busplan2012/118500.pdf Or S-Bahn from Mitte with the first train at 4:31 am. As for whether it's worth getting a bed, can you sleep on the plane? What would you do until getting on the bus at 4 am and where will your bags be while you are doing it? If it were me, I would want some horizontal sleep before a long trip, but of course it's a personal decision that is up to you. | 1

thanks for the feedback. I don't care so much about being able or not to sleep on the plane, since I'll be getting home and I can take some rest there. I'm flying with Austrian airways. Thanks for the info on buses and s-bhan no1: I saw that, but I'm wondering how to get to Mitte or to Schwedenplatz at that time of the day (i.e. 4 am.) the hostels that saw were are around westbahnhof, which is a good 50min. walks from mitte. Is there a night bus service/train service? I actually haven't leave yet, one week to go! The bag issues is what's bothering me most, I was thinking maybe leaving them at the train station safe ??? I also looked into the option of going to one of the airport lounge, which are a few euro more than a hostel beds (!) | 3
Yes, there is night service. Specifics depend on weekday vs weekend so give this a try: | 4
Well the obvious solution is stay at a hotel at the airport - I'm going to assume that if you're leaping out of bed at 4 in the morning to catch a bus, going out late that night isn't really on the agenda. Probably a bit more expensive than a hostel, but on the other hand, at least you don't have to drag yourself out of bed at 4 in the morning... | 5
Another obvious option would be to catch a taxi; fare is around 30 € (if booked in advance) and at that time of the day it takes only 20 minutes or so. | 6
Catherine, I am also from Canada, returning in August and my flight leaves at 8:05. I am facing the same dilemma as you. | 7
I am also from Canada, returning in August and my flight leaves at 8:05. I am facing the same dilemma as you. That extra hour for your flight compared to the OP makes your decision a little easier, perhaps...if I was doing this, I would have a few drinks and maybe something to eat in the cozy MozartStube (open til 6am), near the Westbahnhof, and take an early connection from there to the airport... the hostels that saw were are around westbahnhof, which is a good 50min. walks from mitte Even longer, I would suggest...I'm a swift enough walker and know where I'm going and would probably take at least that amount of time to get there... The problem in Vienna is that the hostels are mostly clustered to the west of the centre and a fair way from Mitte station... | 8
Of course, airport hotel is a good idea, but it's 3 times my budget! :( Thanks for the link to the bus schedules; as I thought it takes soooo much longer to travel before 5 AM (obviously!)... I would need to leave at around 3:34, which at this point doesn't really make sense. Jack, exactly ! what's up with that hostels location? but again, it's quite common that bus terminals are far away from city centers (well furhter than train station)... I think I just might have a couple of drinks untill midnightish, and then head to the airport with all the time in the world and maybe get into a lodge at the airport - for the price of a bed in a hostel. Thanks all for your precious info! | 9
Ohhhh thank you so much for that public transport website! sooo usefull, and in English too!!! | 10
ahhh yes. I just noticed that the earlier an airport loundge was oppening was 5:30. Oh well. | 11
thought I'd ask in this thread. My plane leaves 06:30 on friday from Wien. I'm planning on watching a late movie, have something to eat and then stay the night at the airport. I'm traveling light so carrying my things is not a problem but I don't think I will be allowed to take my 40l backpack into the cinema. | 12
