Hi, I'm planning a 4 -week bicycle tour of Northern Mozambique and have been having the hardest time finding any info on routes, road conditions, recommendations, etc. The plan is to arrive from Lake Malawi/Niassa in the north (around Lichinga), and cross the Niassa reserve if possible (can't find any info about this) all the way to the coast (around Pemba), cycle down the coast to Ilha de Mocambique, and back inland all the way to Malawi through Gurue, etc. Any info on the route, road condiitons, resupply possibilities along the route, food, water, camping, animals, etc. would be greatly appreciated, in particular the bit about crossing Niassa reserve, is there an west to east route that's easy enough to follow? Is it sandy? etc. Thanks!
I'd suggest you contact Nkwichi Lodge for their views on the logistics. It's a very lowly populated area and roads are likely to be poor. It's hard to travel there by car I know. You may also find this link interesting. This guy crossed the Rovuma and traveled down the coast so covered part of your intended route. http://www.thebigafricacycle.com/general-posts/the-mambo-vipi-test-into-mozambique You could also try www.mozguide.com. Email Mike if you don't find what you're looking for and he may have other suggestions of people who can help. | 1
