| kaybee20:34 UTC19 Apr 2007 | On May 2nd we fly into Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris, for 2 weeks of cycling. I have a few questions.
1) We have a copy of LP cycling France. We are not planning to go into Paris. All the instructions for the airport direct you into Paris and to the various train stations. Is it possible to cycle away from the airport or is it impossible due to the roads? We are arriving about 9 am so we have time to get somewhere outside the city.
2) We are considering cycling in Champagne (probably the southern part), Burgundy or possibly Alsace Lorraine (probably too hill). We want to cycle lovely country roads through villages and towns. Good food, wine and reasonable to cheap accommodations. Not really interested in visiting chateaus etc., nor I don't really want to climb monutains on my bike. Have any of you cycled in these regions? What would you recommend? not recommend?
3) at the end of the trip we'll need to be near the airport for a 11 am international flight. Any recommendations for cheap accommodations near the airport or in Paris that would be able to handle our bikes?
Have posted this on the cycling branch too but thought someone on this branch might also have some tips. Thanks

I would say you might want to take a taxi out of CDG just to clear the traffic. CDG is in the sticks (somewhat) so you won't have to go far. Take a look at a map to find a town nearby with a train station. From there you should be able to catch a train over to the Borgogne. Alsace is beautiful but hilly (good workout). I don't know if you've taken a bike trip through France before but the distances are deceiving. The only straight roads are those built by the Romans 2000 years ago. All the country roads fit for biking meander every which way. 5 kilometers by crow is 20 kilometers on bike.
Hove fun. If you're looking for accommodations along the way, use B&Bs. France is full of them. We use an online guide called Hotels & Gites. You can locate them here.
Have fun and be safe,
Valerie

| kaybee18:52 UTC26 Apr 2007 | Thanks for your input. France is supposed to be a cycling paradise because it has all the meandering roads. We don't plan on covering large distances but taking our time enjoying the countryside, etc.
Headed to Fontainebleu the first night (easy to get into Paris from CDG and out to Fontainebleu with bikes) Looking for cheap/reasonable accomodations. Any recommendations for Fontainebleu? Or best just to go to the tourist bureau and see what they have?
From there we are making our way to Auxerre and following the cycling route to Dijon.
For our last night we are looking for cheap/reasonable accomodations near CDG airport or near a train station in Paris where we can easily get transport out to the airport the next morning (11 am flight). Any recommendations (need somewhere where can store our bikes safely).
Thanks

May be this or this map might help? As you can see it suggests to exit CDG to the east (Paris is west) and then turning west later on. If you continue roughly east you can be on your quiet country lanes in a jiffy.
