Cuenca - What to do?

Country forums / South America / Ecuador & the Galapagos Islands

What´s worthwhile to do in Cuenca? Aside from walking around the charming streets? And Ingapirca, take a tour or go independently? How many days in all for the Cuenca area?

Take a bus to Parque Nacional Cajas. Any bus going to Guayaquil can stop there - it's a really scenic upland area.

Depends on how much you have to spare. I was there just under four days, and I did find it really charming. If you're pressed, 2 should be fine. If it matters to you, I felt the food was better in Cuenca than some other places (although I didn't explore much in Quito as I was staying with a host family), just more non-Ecuadorian options. Good Colombian food, for example.

I second the idea about Parque Nacional Cajas.

Ingapirca is dead easy to get to by public transport - no need for a tour...

I'm assuming you will have a guidebook if you go. I'm pretty sure mine listed the times for the bus to Ingapirca. It's a really small site, but I imagine you could find a tour guide on arrival if needed. Or maybe not, there's not many people around. When I went I think there were about 4 other tourists. The other "locals" on the site were llamas.

There are indeed guides available at Ingapirka but most of them only speak Spanish - though a couple do speak English
