Crete in April

Country forums / Western Europe / Greece

Hi, I'm considering going to Crete for a Honeymoon. Getting married right at the end of March, so just wondering what is Crete usually like right at the beginning of April? Is this usually spring-time? (I'm comparing to English weather so I imagine it would definitely be better than that...)

We don't like it too hot and like to go hiking, but would it be better to wait till the end of the April for less chance of rain and more places open?

Thanks

Crete is superb in April. Not sure whether Samaria Gorge will be open though. You better check.
BTW- The Catholic Easter falls on 23.03, so it most likely that the season will be up and running early very next year. Regarding the weather, Crete always has the most favourable temps within Greece [together with Rhodes], although no one can predict anything further.

The last couple of years we just pray for rain.
Anyway Crete in general is not a rainy place and April is spring for us.

So the temperatures on Crete are usually nice on April, although it might get a little chilly during night time.

On April it is also the Orthodox Eastern (27/04) . The week before (specially from 24/04) is lovely period to visit Greece and witness some of the local customs
but also a lot of people (mostly Greeks) are travelling this period so, book ahead.

Agree with Erif
Hiking: about Samaria gorge: usually they open early May, depending on the weather. Although 2 years ago they opened already end of April due to very good weather and hardly any rain in winter.
If Samaria gorge is not open, there's plenty of other gorges, like Imbros gorge and Agia Irini gorge (which is my favourite) which you can hike almost all year round

if you do head to crete make sure you don't miss samaria gorge, elofonissi, khania, milia

Yes Crete is very beautiful in April bur you have to know that rain and wind are not so unfrequent in this season : We had 3 or 4 days of rain (not the whole day) when we visited this island in April several years ago ( and a lot of wind) ; may be I was not lucky .
