Costa Rica Trek - Arenal to Monteverde

Interest forums / Trekking & Mountaineering

Hello All,
Just wanted to give some details of a trek my wife and I just completed in Costa Rica. This was a great trek and we just wanted to recommend it here for like minded individuals. We started from a point south or Arenal called Poco Sol which is on the far eastern side of the protected areas that surround Monteverde cloud forest. We did this in a day (about 8 hours) but you could easily spread it out over two days if you wanted. It is about 20 miles total and weaves along ridges and into valleys following beautiful single track. We began the day early with a truck drive across some definite 4x4 territory and a swinging bridge for vehicles. Pretty cool. The hike starts in rain forest and proceeds through the day into cloud forest ending at the entrance of Monteverde Cloud forest.

We saw tons of birds, sign of puma (w/ cub), jaguar, and margay, not to mention the amazing variety of flora. You cross about 25-26 small to medium streams and ford two rivers....bring extra socks. Depending on the amount of rainfall some of thos streams could be difficult.

We did not see another person all day except the park ranger and english speaking guide (Hugo) who went with us until we reached the end at the ridgeline in Monteverde. It was a spectacular day away from the tourist beat. We arranged this hike through a company called Jacamar Naturalist Guides. Their website is www.arenaltours.com. Highly recommend...Hugo and owner Humberto where great and very flexible to our desires. If you want more info please feel free to PM me.

Bottom line, great hike in CA.
