Hi there
Does anyone have any thoughts on the average cost (on the low range) of a night's accommodations and meal in Madagascar? Any thoughts, idea would be fabulous.

If this is useful - we visited Madagascar for almost 3 weeks in 2006. We stayed in some nice places (Sakamanga in Tana, Chez Gerard & Francine in Nosy Be) but also camped several nights. Same with food - varied from street stalls to nice restaurants. Visited several parks, as you must, and took internal flights to and from Nosy Be and from Morondava to Tana. Hired a 4x4 for one day. Took a 3 day river trip.

All in all, we spent about €50 per person/day, not counting the international flights.

You should be able to afford a great time in Madagascar no matter what your budget. If you're on a backpackers budget you can stay in a decent hotel for 15000 - 40000 AR (~10 - 25USD) per night and eat meals at malagasy hotelies for 3000 - 6000 Ar (~2 - 4 USD).

If you want really good meals and really nice places to stay you could eat for 10000 - 20000 Ar per person and get hotels for around 50 Euros.

These are all Tana prices specifically but it's pretty accurate for everywhere I've been on the island including Isle Aux Naut and Isle St Marie.

I wouldn´t consider places like Sakamanga being at the lower range, if tour operators lodge the clients there. In december 2006 I stayed in hotels beginning from 8 -14 Euro per night. Even in tourist areas like Nosy Be you can get accomodation on this price level, if you don´t mind missing any convenience. In small towns it can be even less (or more if there is only one hotel around).

Eating where les Malgaches+ eat can be cheaper too, depending on the trust in your stomach. I have been paying from 1,5 Euro for a meal and had no bad experience. Except once, after eating in a restaurant frequented by the middle class in Tana, when I felt too safe by eating half grilled +chicken sushi sytle though ;-).

(Looking forward to travel the big red island next january again)
