Corn Islands for the solo traveler?

Country forums / Central America / Nicaragua

Hi there,

I would like to visit the corn islands soon but am a bit confused on the best way to go about it. From my research it does not look like there are places to stay that have dorms or some sort of communal rooms and I do not really want to fork out 40 dollars for a single at a hotel that only has couples and families. Does anyone have a suggestion for a decent place to stay that wont be too expensive and that is a little more condusive to meeting people? I dont care if it is on little or big corn, although I hope to dive most of the time and have limited days so big corn may make more sense.

Best!

Casa Blanca, BIG CORN! Its right on the beach and cost about $5 when i was there about 5 yr ago. Close to town, a wood frame building run by locals, short walk to town. Interesting clientele. I never made it to Little Corn, I liked it so much. theres a dive shop there, i think its called Platypus Divers. the diving wasnt like Honduras or Belize, more like the Bahamas.

It sounds like you haven't done much research. There are a bunch of cabins on the windward side with a great communal atmosphere. Hopefully you can afford to pay $15US?

I think I would go to Little Corn if you are looking to dive and hang with other travelers. You will be much happier there especially with the diving equipment. It isn't tourist season anymore and there will be many more tourists on Little Corn. There are cheap spots on both islands. Ask when you get there. Folks will help you.

There is plenty of lodging via both the Internet and MOON or LP Guidebooks, so not sure why you are struggling.

And a great Blog from guy living around there exploring the coast..
