Connermara Day Trip from Galway

Country forums / UK & Ireland / Ireland

I would like to take a day trip to Connemara from Galway when I'm in Ireland in September. Any advice on routes, attractions along the way, things to see in the national park that aren't on all the tourist sites?

Hi....
Galway from Connemara is easy in a car.
However I've never done it any other way, so can't comment on public transport options - sorry.
I'm sure others who have, will be along to help you soon.
It's a truly beautiful region of Ireland.
Enjoy ! !

Thanks, I will have a car so it's nice to hear it's easy.

Go to the national park along the coast road, but perhaps cutting across the pensinsula of Carna and Roundstone via the bog road that starts near Lough Avally and the Invermore river.

On the way back, take the road through Finnea past Lough Nafooey and the bottom of Lough Mask and to visit Cong and its abbey near the shores of Lough Corrib before heading back to Galway.

Or the other way round.

Plenty of driving and a long day but arguably worth it.

You should get a good local map, the Ordnance Survey Discovery Series is the best - Google Maps is not very helpful with the small local roads but they're sometimes the most scenic.

I shouldn't miss it....having a car is great and the distances are quite short allowing you to see lots in a day!
The food is great in Clifden from my experience having spend many returns there for brief stays at the Glen...I think....dinners were excellent!
