Thanks for the congratulations! To be perfectly honest, I thought that we would roll England easily. But bloody hell, that was a tough match England put up! They were worthy defending champs in the end and there need not be any shame in defeat for them. Maybe not the spectacle of running rugby neutrals would have wanted, but it was a tremendously physical class between two sides that were both very good defensively.

PS: the party at my local rugby club last night was absolutely INSANE! And my head doesn't even hurt (any more). :)

Well done. I thought England might have done it, as the 'Boks hadn't really been tested in the tournament, but the domination in the lineout was incredible, and the tackling. Well played.

I was actually quite impressed that there were no tryscores at all... excellent defensive play on both sides...

I had this recuring nightmare over the past week,.
in it, Mike Cattt holds the Web Ellis trophy above his head while Losh jewsy and the rest, in their tight white frocks, celebrate ,.....
now, however, life is sweet. It is a beautifull day in Cape Town and the Chardonnay is slightly chilled and well wooded.
Me thinks it shall be a slightly fatty sirloin, cut thick, going onto the braai just now. Then onto a full bodied red with fresh berrie tannins and a hint of savannah.
Ah!, I love the Bokke.

On a broader note, I ventured over to the World of Sport branch, for the first time in years. And was reminded that the tone of that branch is a little less genteel than here. So much so that there is a special "sticky" at the top of the first page warning against abuse. Anyway, I I hadn't intended posting there, but after reading some of the posts I couldn't resist. Here's what I said . . .

I find it incredible that this has been debated so much. And then Sky News quotes the player concerned as "thinking he'd scored" and that (in the opinion of Sky) "players know these things". Or words to that effect. In which case I'm hugely impressed with Cueto, that he has eyes in the back of his head and/or supersensory feeling that enables his foot in his boot to detect the difference between grass and chalk.

There were three different camera angles in the coverage we got in South Africa. And after viewing the first two, the S.A. commentators were saying it was a try. Or what they meant was that there was nothing (at that stage) to show that it wasn't. But then came the third angle, directly behind. And far clearer than that BBC photo, which seems to be from the second camera angle. (The first was in front.) And then it was very clear, the foot touched the line. And the rule is very simple, that's out. I've also viewed the action from my recording, and that confirmed what was already very clear.

But hey, if it makes you guys feel any better, take all seven points. Even though the way Wilkinson had been kicking, it was most likely he'd have missed the conversion. But of course you then need to subtract the three points that England got from the penalty that was awarded thereafter.

Kudos to England for turning around their earlier dismal performance, including that 36-0 thrashing by S.A. But the better team won, is that so hard to swallow? Get over it.
