Climbing Carrauntoohill in mid to late october?

How is the weather there in mid to late oct? And hows public communication to the area from dublin?

Impossible to give a definitive description of weather around the Kerry hills in October. Anything is possible, but October has had the reputation for being one of the drier months. The days are shorter but if there is a bit of high pressure, the conditions can be better than mid-summer when there is often a lot of humidity and midges to contend with. Start early from the hydro plant near Loch Acoose, on a settled day and do the horseshoe clockwise starting with Skregmore, Beenkeragh, Carrauntoohil and finishing over Caher. You'll have a great day;)

The weather is very unpredictable in the mountains, it can change any minute and you're in trouble, especially at this time of the year. In now way you should do the climb all on your own!

Public communication to Dublin? Well, there is no phone booth on the mountain, mobile phones might work, but not in sheltered parts of the mountain. And shouting from the mountain to Dublin might be a bit useless ... ;-)

But I assume you mean public transport? There are bus connections from Dublin to Killarney and from there around the Ring, but hardly any inland from village to village or to places from where to start the climb. Maybe there are private companies for transport to these spots, but if they operate in late October I don't know.

seriously impossible to predict weather in ireland. we had our "summer" in april/may this year, it rained ALL through summer, then we've had nice weather (relatively) all through september and started raining now this week. Very unpredictable. Check out www.meteireann.ie for weather forecasts. You'd definitely want to get a good detailed forecast before embarking on carrauntoohill!!
