choosing among two places

Country forums / Western Europe / France

Bonjour,

I'm booking for a place to stay in Paris and it has come to two places for us to choose.

Place Monge on line 7 seem to be VERY close to downtown, but it's a smaller place with 1 bed. Is it safe to walk home at night?

La Chapelle is a bit further north, two beds for the same price. Is it too far to the city center?

I'm concerned about the safety at night in Monge, and also would like to know if La Chapelle is a convenient location to stay. If you could please share some opinion it'd be wonderful.

Merci,

Shannon

Stay near Place Monge. It's perfectly safe and within walking distance to far more sites you are likely to want to visit than La Chapelle.

I live near La Chapelle, so I have mixed feelings. Time spent on the metro is not really much of a factor, because you can get anywhere in Paris quite quickly.

La Chapelle is the heart of the "Little India" area of Paris so it is quite funky and different. You can find lots of stuff extremely cheap there and a number of surprises. Place Monge is more the "traditional" Paris, so you get exactly what you expect (probably) and no surprises.

Both areas are perfectly safe, but if you have doubts, you would generally feel safer in the Place Monge area. ("No surprises")

Bonjour!

Great! thanks for the replys. After my sister left I would need a cheaper place for myself, these are the options:

Simplon on line 4 (I heard line 4 is usually packed?)
Colonel Fabien on line 2
Voltaire on line 9

They're pretty much same price with 1-3 euro differences. Is there a significant reason to choose one among the others?

Merci!

Shannon

I would avoid Simplon. Of the remaining two, I would probably prefer Voltaire, but the Colonel Fabien area has its appeal -- the Belleville Chinatown on one side, and the proximity of the Canal Saint Martin.

I have stayed in the Monge area a couple of times and never felt safety was an issue.
