Cheap food and transportation

Country forums / Africa / Egypt

I'm trying to do a little budget planning for my upcoming RTW trip, and was hoping somebody could give me an idea of the following costs in CAIRO.

1) how much standard cheap meals cost (like what the locals eat in a local eatery)

2) how much a one way inner-city bus, subway, trolley, etc... costs.

I know these sound like negligible costs, but they will give me an idea as to how much basic services cost.

Thanks!

  1. buddy Cairo is cheap! a meal is half a dollar, for the small .... Koshari portion. a pure mango juice is about almost half dollar. lentil soup is about a dollar.
    2. can't remember the price for teh subway or minibus, but was cheap!

1) Falafels cost 10 cents. Shwarmas 50 cents. Neither are good, but at that price, who cares? The most I ever paid was...I believe $2 for falafel in a nicer restaurant, a HUGE jump but actually quite good for MANY many falafel beds and lots of bread, salad, etc.

2) Bus is under 10 cents, maybe under 5 cents. I honestly couldn't tell if the price difference depended on where you got off or whether or not you had exact change. Metro is about 15 cents.
