What's the best way to get from Chang Mai to Luang Prabang?
What's Lao Aviation like? (is that the name of the national airline)?

Lao Airlines, they changed the name a few years ago.

As Hanuman said, only Lao Airlines flies on this route, though previously you had another choice with Thai Airways.

An hour by plane, 2 days by boat, 3 days by boat and pickup/truck/bus.

I flew CM to LP in February on Lao Air. Good service, decent plane, on time, cold beer. No problem. The food won't win any awards (mystery meat sandwich ), but unlike most US airlines, they served some. Their office in CM is just outside the wall, NW side of inner city. I would suggest confirming your flight day before. It was easier to walk to the office than to call them.

Laos Airlines is fine, despite some unfounded rumours. Flight CNX-LPQ is quick and easy. By river or road would take minimum 3 days.
