Carb-free accompaniments...

... for soup?

I've discovered that a low carb diet does wonders for my IBS and also weightloss. I like soups and at this time of year I probably have it most days for lunch or dinner.

The trouble is that I can't work out a low or carb-free alternative to bread. I like bread with soup normally, but I am in the process of reducing down my carbohydrate intake.

Any useful suggestions please?

Hi tea! Sorry I didn't answer you yesterday, I got busy and then I forgot to return to GS.

I also prefer a nice crusty bread with soup, but when I was getting way too heavy, I switched to crackers. I don't know about no carbs but you could at least find some that are lower in carbs.

Might like to check out toasted/grilled/pan fried "Indian pappadum",chapati(from mung beans powder) Inodnesian"emping"(made from mernijau nuts),corn grit flat bread, or crispy prawn/fish crackers from Thailand/Indonesia/Malaysia.

2

How about making your own croutons. That way your getting some carbs but not as much as with a few slices of bread.

3

Not as quick but a few roasted sweet potato wedges? yum.

4

Chick peas are low GI 'good' carbs and roti/chapati are made with chick-pea (gram) rather than wheat flour. Just don't use heaps of butter to fry them - use a little oil or dry fry.

5

Scottish oatcakes - they go well with lentil and a few other soups. (Eat them as a 'side' i.e. do not immerse them in the soup.)

6

Poppadom and chapati are a great idea, thankyou. I'll pop to Akrams this week!

7

Don't forget to advise Akrams that there'll still be lots of carbs - and whatever the carb saving, it'll will more than be made up with fat :)

8

Rice thins are a reasonable alternative. Not as high in carbs as bread - and not quite so tempting so you eat less. Also wrap type breads work well, particularly if made from chick peas or rice. Best wishes - keeping to low carb certainly helps but it is not quite as easy as it sounds is it,

9

"Chips" made from Jerusalem artichokes. I think they are technically classified as non- carbs and they're good.

"roti/chapati are made with chick-pea (gram) rather than wheat flour"

Not where I live they aren't-of course it's mostly Punjabi cooking here but if you type in "Chapati Recipe" into Google the first 6 matches will be for Whole Wheat Flour I didn't look any further.

There was a Trinidadian place nearby that did Gram flour Chapati bread as part of a specialty called Doubles-tasty but heavy as a rock in the guts.

If you decide to use poppadoms pop them in the microwave till they puff so then you don't need to fry them. It is great way to have them and not feel guilty and very quick.

How about oatcakes? I used to eat Nairns oatcakes with soup and they went well. You can vary the flavour too, I seem to remember cheese flavoured ones as well as plain - there are probably other flavours too but I just can't remember!

I endorse this, not least since Nairns are Scottish oatcakes. I also endorse it because of what I posted at 6 :)

I must have had a brain fart when reading this thread...I seriously didn't see your post at #6!

Pork rinds.

16

Parmesan crisps. Just place a tablespoons of grated parmesan on a try and bake till golden. Leave on a wire rack to cool and go crunchy.
