Cape Town to Cango Route

Country forums / Africa / South Africa

Hi, next week heading out to SA but sadly we are on quite a tight schedule. After a few days in Cape Town, we are renting a car, and then we are heading east to stay at Hog Hollow (The Crags, Plettenberg Bay), then off to Shamwari.

We need to do the Cape Town to Hog Hollow trip in a day (no flexibility there at all), and it looks like a good 7 hour drive.Google Maps suggests three different routes, of similar KM and time. One is east to Worcester, then north around Anysberg Nature Reserve on the N1, then down on the R323 then R62. The next is similar but going south of Anysberg on the R60. The third option is south east on the N2, south of Stellenbosch, then north on the R324 then R62.
Ambitiously, we want to stop at Cango Wildlife Ranch on the way. We’ll be getting a very early start, and it doesn’t matter to us if we get to Hog Hollow late on, but my question is about the route to take.
Would someone be able to give some advice here, thanks.

if you want to travel via oudtshoorn to spend 1-2 hours at cango wildlife ranch, i would take take option 2 (that is the one that seems the "fastest / shortest"). the drive will take about 8 hours, add 2 hours at the ranch and 1 hour for lunch and toilet stops, so you are looking at an 11 hour trip at the minimum. you dont really want to be driving after sunset, so leave early enough to be in plet around 7.30pm. leaving at 7.00am will give you an "extra" 1.5 hours for stops on the way.
