Cape Town

I only have one full day in Cape Town, what are the things I must see?

Cape point and Boulders beach in the morning, then, Table mountain and Kirstenbosch in the afternoon, Long street in the evening !

1

Wouldn't this depend on your interests? In any case, I don't see how anyone could do all the things listed in #1's post in one day. I spent four hours in Kirstenbosch alone and still didn't feel that was enough (but I'm a garden lover). Perhaps the best thing to do is to take the hop on, hop off double decker bus tour on either the red route (the main city sights and Table Mountain) or the blue one (a mini peninsula tour that goes to Kirstenbosch). The entire route is a little over two hours on the red one--I think it's the same on the blue but I didn't do that one. The tickets are good for 24 hours so you could take the whole thing and then return to the one or two things that really interested you. And then, if you have the energy, you can still go to Long Street in the evening.

You need a whole day (at least!) for Cape Point in my opinion.

But yes, it all depends on your interests. If you like the historical stuff, perhaps a Robben Island + township tour. If you like nature, spend the day at Cape Point. If you like wine, go to Stellenbosch/Franschhoek/Paarl and visit some wineries.

Dianne, agree that my suggestion makes for a long day with very short stops, but an early morning start from Cape point, just visiting the point and goodhope, from there to Boulders. Straight on the M4 and then M3 to Kirstenbosch for approx 1 - 1 1/2 hours and then finally Table mountain is possible, and if your'e up for a late night ? Long streets ready and waiting !

PoP yes fully agree with you, but how do you pick one thing to suggest without thinking you've left out the experiences that others may find most enjoyable ?

Fiona, whatever you choose to do ? I'm sure that you will enjoy your CT experience !

I'm exhausted just reading about it, Martin, but that's me. Or perhaps my age is showing?

5

I would either do, only cape point. or robben island / plus table mountain tram. Its a shame you dont have more time. If i absolutely had to choose, I would say robben, then table mountain, its pure capetown.

6

martraveller - I'd rather try to pick out something the OP would like to do but we haven't gotten any answers back...

7

Martraveller - I thought your idea was perfect! But, may miss out one thing (for me probably Kirstenbosh, as for me it couldnt be a priority if I only had one day.)

I would say Cape Point and Boulders in the morning, have an early lunch at the restaurant in Boulders. Then head into town and get the red route bus, which takes in table mountain and will give you lots of info on the history, I think they go to the District 6 Museum as well. That way you get quite a balance view of the place - a bit of history, peninsula beauty, wildife (penguins and baboons anyway!!) and beach.

Yes its a helluva lot to cram in! Again its all down to interests - OP? Helloo... OP?

How about Cape Town airport

9

what about jumping on the "City Sightseeing" doubledecker? http://www.city-sightseeing.com/cape_town.htm

seb

Dianne, yes it's a bit hectic ! But we young at hearts can do it (and thats including you)

PoP Full agreement, but dont you concur that 'BOULDERS IS A MUST!'

Caroline, depending on Fiona's time of visit ? Surely if the Protea's are in full bloom a visit to Kirstenbosch comes a close 3rd behind The peninsula (personal choice) and Table mountain (Compulsory).

Fiona, could you give us a bit more detail on your likes/dislikes, when will you be there ? There are so many knowledgeable people (not including me as im just a mere touristy type person) on this branch, who would find it a pleasure to help you out !

Drink Windhoek not Castle

But I don't want to do it. :)

Anyway, I don't think Boulders is a must. The day I went there were very few penguins and the ones that were there seemed rather arrogant. And the water temperature! For someone used to the Gulf of Mexico it was bone-chilling.

Of course it's a must ;-)

13

It is a must PoP, I agree!

Dianne I'm curious where you went - that you saw so very few penguins? We go there often (because its one of the best beaches around - sheltered, stunning, safe for kids, warm water (that's relative of course!) and there are always hundres of penguins. Maybe you were just on the first bit of beach and didnt go to the colony along the boardwalk, or to the small beaches over the rocks? Or maybe they hibernate - I dont know!

14

If it's warm - Clifton Beach, Brunch, Boulders etc etc - if cold and miserable head to Stellenbosch for lunch at Spier - truly awesome!!

mfiona,Look into the list of websites I sent 13-June.I would do the bus in the morning,(two hour tour)it's cheap R90 when I looked last month and you can climb on and off .Then get back to V&A Waterfront for
lunch.YOu get on the bus at V&A (by the way). And spend the rest of the day at V&A . There's just sooooo
much to do and see there.

See what you would like in the V&A Waterfront on www.waterfront.co.za . You can lunch there and gaze at Table Mountain all you want and sip all the
wines of the region at the wine-tasting shop (cant remember the name)

Table Mountain:www.table-mountain.co.za

www.capetownbig6.co.za This would be for you. The most popular 6 sites.

You would have a pretty good idea of what's cooking in Cpt. If you read all the brochures at the
information bureau of V&A,you might see something interesting there.

This is for a relaxed day - just to enjoy. If you like that of course.

ENJOY AND HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME.
