Can you get from KTM to Muktinath in one day?

Country forums / Indian Subcontinent / Nepal

Question, if you take the earliest flight out of KTM (to Pokhara) and have a jeep waiting for you, can you get up to Muktinath in a single day (starting in KTM, ending in Muktinath)?

Maybe yes, but a very long day. No guarantee it will work. Road to Jomsom is very rough (worse during monsoon). Likely will have to change vehicles one or multiple times. Better to stay in Pokhara and then bus/jeep or fly.

If you manage to do it in one day, you would risk severe altitude sickness, even life-threatening in extreme cases. Muktinath is on 3700 meters, that's an altitude that requires proper acclimatization.

It is true that Muktinath/Ranipauwa is too high for comfort, but unlike many similar locations it is very easy and fast to evacuate to lower altitude if and when AMS hits. Kagbeni is already a kilometre lower and only a 15 minute jeep ride away.

Or fly to Jomsom and then it's trivially easy to get to Muktinath in a day. If cost/budget only allows flying as far as Pokhara, still easy to get to Muktinath in a day if you hire a private jeep, otherwise you may run into delays depending on the time of year and the passenger volume heading up to Muktinath.

As for altitude, if you've done this type of thing before and haven't had problems, then you know what works for you, but I think for most people, going any higher than about 3000m without any acclimatization is a potential risk... above 3500m without acclimatization is basically asking for trouble
