Can we do this?

Interest forums / Kids To Go

Hi people,

Right, well first off i should change my user name to Itchyfeetx4 now ;) I had our son in January and im already desperate to head off!

So we are thinking, next Feb. My daughter will be 5 1/2 and the boy just turned 1. What i guess i want to know is how far can we get on our budget. We will have about £7500. We want to be gone for 3 months. Im thinking-

-fly to thailand and spend just under 2 weeks there (just seeing a few places we havnt seen as we have been twice).
- overland to cambodia, siem riep, phnom pehn and sihanoukville for a total of 2 weeks
- then fly to kuala lumpa for4 days
-fly to Bali for 30 days or so (with a car hire for 2 or 3 weeks)
-fly back to Thailand for 30 days (islands)

Is it possible on my budget (need to get international flights from uk and back out of that too!).

We will need aircon, but my daughter has a therma mat, and baby will be in bed with us, so 1 double bed will do. The bubba will be weaned by then but also still breast fed. Would be nice to have a pool. Will have to get the odd admission ticket too, like zoos etc, and angkor way. Will use local transport when we can. Eat local as we and my daughter eat anything, even the spicy.

Can we do it? We will also be buying nappies out of that too.....

Thanks in advance!

You can certainly do it. I think your budget is perfect. I'm not sure what your flights would cost, but we did a trip quite similar to what you describe, also with 2 kids, and our budget was $2,500 to $3,000 a month not including airfare (so that's £1,600 to £1,900 a month). In other words for 3 months, £6,000 should more than do it, leaving you £1,500 or more for flights. Within Asia, look for flights on Air Asia, which are mind-bogglingly cheap. Even if flights work out to costing you a bit more than that, you should still be okay, because our budget often covered 2 hotel rooms (when there was only 1 double bed in the rooms) and we had pools at least two-thirds of the time, and both of our kids ate adult-size portions.

Wish I was doing it again right now. Good luck & have fun with the planning.
