Campfire fuel in MongoliaCountry forums / North-East Asia
I plan to trek across Mongolia June to August and weight is an issue. In inland Australia there is almost always enough fuel around to get a small campfire going. A few twigs is enough to boil a billy. Will there be wood for fuel or will I need to bring fuel stoves?
fuel stoves are good, but the super high lead content of the fuel out in the country clogs them up soooo fast. there is usually enough wood / dung, but a fuel stove is an awesome backup. it can be fun trying to light them in high winds with a crowd of curious locals watching you. | 1
I can answer this question from experience now and given the lack of trees in Mongolia the best answer is to plan on using cow manure. I wouldn't accept this before I left but soon realised that it was the best option. Still, it is amazing how often you will find wood, sticks from shrubs or really coarse grass in treeless areas but you will nearly always find dry cow manure. Select the driest cow pats and the best tip if you are prepared to carry equipment was from others that I travelled with. They had a [Sierra Stove|zzstove.com/sierra.html], a small fuel stove with a fan that ran on a AA battery which really improved the performance of the cow manure for cooking. Then again, many meals don't need cooking. | 2
