camera and laptop or no camera and laptop?

Country forums / Central America / Guatemala

I have been trying to get a feel for guatemala vs some other places like nicaragua which I am familiar with regards to cameras or laptops. I always travel with a digital camera (nothing super special) and a laptop or tablet (buying a new one) I haven't had any problems, always keep the computer in the hotel room but now I am wondering if I should continue to travel that way in guatemala. If I plan on taking buses or shuttle from antigua to the lake, or to copan honduras, I want to take my camera!
I dont use the computer outside the hotel but am concerned about my bus trips.

I am starting in Mexico and really would like to bring a computer - any thoughts?

I travel just as you usually do (a camera,and a small laptop/netbook).

Same in Guatemala, and had no problems at all there. Most of the places I stayed had wifi,so I used the netboook in the hostel/hotel....and I prefer to have a decent camera when I'm walking around (its a very photogenic country).

On the bus trips....I keep valuable stuff next to/on me (rather than stashed under or on top of the bus). Not a real problem if you have a daypack/smaller bag,and a moneybelt for cash, cards etc.

2

Keep anything of value on your person when transiting, concealed in a bag you hold on to, and stays with you.

I would bring it and do as Mr. Moto says. I find my 7 inch tablet is the right fit for the basics.

4

Trip insurance in case something gets ripped off. I always have expensive cameras put don't bother with lap tops as many internet places.

Yes, Trip insurance. I never used to bother with it but now the airlines are so screwed up that you never know what is going to happen next.

I haven't been tempted to take a laptop but traveled with a tiny (cheap) netbook for years before it died and now take an iPad mini. I like backing up my photos and often blog as I go.

Concur, bring it, it's not a big deal. Follow the normal precautions.

One of the best ways to protect a laptop is to make it look like you don't have it with you. What has worked for me when carrying valuables has been getting an ugly bag from a local market. If you walk near the larger produce you should be able to get an empty bag of flour or whatever for 2q. It may be dirty outside but very clean inside. No one is going to empty a bag of flour without getting every last speck out of it. Put your laptop in a bag like this. Oso blanco is my favorite. Then put something around the laptop like a sweatshirt or whatever. Then, you can act like you don't have anything valuable but still keep your eye on it. You can casually put it on your laptop if you are on a bus or shuttle but don't bear hug it with two arms unless you want to tell everyone that you have something valuable. Not wearing expensive jewelry, expensive clothes, etc. can also help lessen the attention.

Having said that, I have seen many people flash around all kinds of iphones, ipads, etc., while talking loudly about needing to get money out of the ATM. Luckily, most of them finish their trip with no major problems.
