Buying a Van in EuropeCountry forums / UK & Ireland / England
Im looking to buy a car/van to travel around Europe in. I have my citizenship from northern Ireland and my EU passport, although i was born and reside in Australia. I am predomitaely travelling around france, spain, portugal coastlines so would like a left hand drive if possible. The information I'm looking for is where would be the easiest and cheapest place to buy a car and what would i have to do in terms of taxes and insurances or any other barriers to purchasing a car. Any information would be very much appreciated! Marc
it's not impossible but it is nowhere near as easy as in Australia. Your main problem is insurance, which will cost you a fortune as a foreigner with no no claims record. You'll also have issues because you'll need an address from which to insure the car. there is a website kicking about which does do insurance for people in your situation - most mainstream providers won't touch you. Unhelpfully I can't remember what it is but hopefully google will turn it up. the details vary by country, but you will (as in Oz) need some kind of tax, some kind of roadworthy certificate and ideally some breakdown cover. | 1
