Bus from San Perdo Sula to La Cebia on Sunday

Country forums / Central America / Honduras

I am arriving in Honduras next Sunday. As I can't fly to Ulita on a Sunday I'm planning to take a bus to from San Pedro Sula to La Cebia, need to arrive in La Cebia by 4pm for the last ferry to the island.

Can you please tell me where to catch this bus and what company is best, so I can plan to stay closer to the bus station. The LP I have dated Jan 2007 states the 'new' bus station out of town is not yet complete, I assume by now it is? Therefore, do I need to go there or do I catch a bus from down town?

Sorry this is last minute, any advise on this matter would be great. Many thanks.

The new bus terminal IS now open, but Hedman Alas has a little both and therefore I would suspect? service from the airport. I am not sure how it works, but check out their website here: Hedman Alas
I think the trip is about 4 hrs btw... Have fun and have a baleada for me!

Sosa no longer has a Sunday afternoon flight to Utila, leaving at 2:30 from SAP? They did last August.

Depends what you mean by "best." Hedman Alas is the most expensive, but they have some nice features...it's riding first-class.

I took Catisa (February 2007...didn't have an LP so I'm not sure about the bus station comment), which cost 75 lempiras. I suppose you could call it a chicken bus, but it was a nice Mercedes (not a schoolbus) and it didn't stop that frequently. I think I left at noon? Hard to remember exactly. I had bussed up from another town early in the morning, missed the 10:20am Hedman Alas bus, then checked email so...could have been nearly noon. I definitely made it onto the 4pm ferry.

I am in a similar situation. I arrive in SPS on Monday at 11am. Is there a possibility of getting to La Ceiba for the 4pm ferry ride?
How often do buses leave for La Ceiba and how long is it from the airport to the bus terminal?

Just fly it. It costs about $25 or so more than Hedman Alas' fare, and you will get there in a half hour. The road and driving conditions between SPS and La Ceiba, to put it plainly SUCK. Spend a little extra money, and fly it. It's cheap insurance, and will keep you off of Hedman Alas. If you have to bus it, try Viana from the new bus terminal. Service and security as good as Hedman Alas, and the fare is about 40% less.

I was looking to take one of the cheaper buses to La Ceiba. I'm ok with staying the night in La Ceiba and getting the morning ferry, would just like to know so we're not rushing for no reason. Where is the new bus terminal? No where is being very clear on where the buses leave San Pedro Sula, so any specifics on that would be great
Cheers

I'm not sure who, but try to check a local source about the Utila ferry. Maybe the place you're going to stay on Utila? 6 months ago when we were there the signs still said 2 ferries/day each way between La Ceiba and Utila but they were only running the afternoon ferry. There were people waiting all day for that ferry - meh. Also note that the one we rode last August was the rockiest, longest boat ride you never want to take - barfed my guts out and the trip took twice as long as the previous time. Usually the dramamine they give you if you request it with your ticket works fine for me. Hopefully they've replaced the ferry by now and are back to 2 runs each/day.

As far as I know, they run the ferry from Ceiba to Utila every day, morning and afternoon.

8

That was the general opinion last August, too, but they'd cut to 1 each way without even changing the sign at the dock.

I just took the ferry (La Ceiba-Utila-La Ceiba) last week and it's still running twice a day...morning and afternoon. The morning ferry leaves La Ceiba at 9:30am. They recommend getting there 30 min beforehand...to buy a tickets, etc. It's a small ferry...so be prepared for a "rough" ride. Take Dramamine, if needed. I wish I had.

More info about the ferry....http://www.aboututila.com/TravelInfo/Utila-Princess/Index.htm

If you need to grab a room in La Ceiba for a night...try the Gran Hotel Paris. You can get a room for about $35.

Good luck and have a great time in Honduras!

mamatonic - Thanks for the update on the ferries - glad to hear they've returned to service twice a day each way and that they have the new ferry running.
