Bulago island warning

Hi all,

I just want to warn people about travelling to Bulago island on Lake Victoria, Kampala. There IS bilharzia and malaria on the island, despite what the owners say, so please do take care. They declare the island to be malaria-free, although their own daughter died in 2006 of cerebral malaria. DONT swim in the lake - you almost certainly will get sleeping sickness which has no immediate symtoms but if you dont know you have it, can lead to severe mental and physical problems later in life, and early death.

This applies also to anyone who has ever been to the Island in the last 10 years or more - if you have ever been there and swum in Lake victoria, please go and get a blood test done at a tropical disease hospital.

I would not dispute what you are saying and it is very likely the lake has Bilharzia and Bilharzia is common in most lakes, dams and rivers in Africa.

However, I doubt if you swim in the lake you will get Sleeping Sickness as this disease is spread by the Tetsee Fly
