Bread Basket of the world in UkraineCountry forums / Eastern Europe & the Caucasus / Ukraine
Hi ! We are planning to travel to Russia (Moscow , St Petersburg) in mid June. My son is very eager to see the wheat fields which Ukraine is very famous for. Since we will be in Russia and understand there are trains to Kieve, am looking for suggestions of any place we may visit from Moscow or Kiev for the same. Thanks.
Taking a train from Moscow to Kyiv you won't pass the breadbasket are which is In the south central part of the country. See this map: http://www.fas.usda.gov/remote/soviet/Crop_Area_2004/Ukraine/ukr_wwht.htm Trains from Moscow to ths area (Odessa) will take 24 hours. Not sure that this makes good sense unless you were planning to visit Ukraine as well. Ruth | 1
Hi, | 2 | |
After visiting Kiev, were you then planning on returning to Moscow?? I do hope you realize that this means you'd need a multiple-entry Russian visa! There's no need to travel to another country to see wheat fields. Russia grows a lot of wheat itself, especially in its southwestern provinces and in the Volga region. See this map. | 3
Actually to see wheat fields, you don't have to leave the US. Ruth | 4
What makes you imagine the OP is American, Ruth? His profile says "Singapore," and, at any rate, I find it completely impossible to imagine an American who would ask this kind of question. In the perishingly unlikely event an American could possibly get excited at the thought of seeing a wheat field, they'd head to the Midwest, of course. (The US grows about as much wheat as Russia and Ukraine combined.) | 5
To see the wheat fields you have to go more south and they will be difficult to spot from the train for two reasons as long distance trains mainly travel at night and there's almost constantly vegetation between the railway line and the field behind it blocking it from view. | 6
Hey, Thanks everybody for the input.... Appreciate the same... this is what I like about lonely planet... regards... | 7
