Brazil vs Panama

Country forums / Central America / Panama

I wonder if Panama's living cost is similar or lower than Brazil's....is there someone who's been to these countries during the same trip....I'm asking about living cost regarding urban transport, food, housing and nightlife...

I shall appreciate all the replies....

Deja Vu?

1

I would say that Panama is cheaper than Brazil for the most part..transport,housing,food and nightlife..but they are also kinda diffrent you can easily spend alot of money in both if you wanted to
happy travels

2

Germuno answered this question with some great info, why are you asking again?

His REPLY-

both curitiba & panama city have the same population...but the similarity mostly ends there...

curitiba is cleaner, safer, more expensive, different language.

.. panama city is sea level on the pacific & closer to the atlantic than curitiba which is in the mountains

...both have train access to the atlantic...2 hours to colon from panama city

... twice as long a train ride to paranagua from curitiba & twice as enjoyable...one of the greatest short train rides in the world

..if you got the extra $$$ & portuguese is no problem & you don't need the ocean at your doorstep...it's panama city

3

I still would like to know what Solo meant by not having to visit a country he "invested " in.

4

You can get all the info you need on a country these days via the internet, everyhting is like next door....I am invested in Bio Fuels in Brazil....never been though.

5

So I am sure you are up to date on the working conditions of cane farmers in Brazil? Do you care? Here is one article among many. I can't vouch for the source but I don't think they are lying because some liberal agenda.

6

Back to the topic at hand, an interesting note. Panama City's future plans for mass transit is based on Curitibas.

7

a few years ago both cities were hailed as the best latin american cities...curitiba and panama city

8

Nice article George...thx

9

At BRL1.75 for 1USD, Panama is cheaper than Brazil.
There are simmilarities, as for some people Panama does have more in common with (parts of) Brazil than (parts of) Colombia or Costa Rica.

10

i'll bite 2travel2know...what do panamaians have in common with brasil that they don't with their neighbors costa rica & former parent colombia?

...i don't think that the currency exchange by itself determines price of travel/living...if thus the united states would be considered cheaper then brasil as well....

11

Food, Carnival, music instruments/beats, indian/native culture (Darien indians use darts, like their fellow natives in the Amazon), there are some words from Brazilian portuguese here.
I'm bias towards Panama, but ask a Brazilian who has lived here.
Panama was and still is a crossroad of the world, as such it's bound to get things from other places more than neighbours Costa Rica and "former parent" Colombia (the same parent of Venezuela and Ecuador)..

12

what a stretch 2travel...

13

So are you going to divest now Solo, or is the money just too good?

14

It is a Hedge Fund, and it has tanked anyway- haha

15

Hey if don't have a problem with slavery you should invest in Chiquita! All about the money right Solo? Gotta keep the models happy, and no money no house in the Hamptons or skiing in Japan.

16

i think i see where you're going jackson

...do you have any stocks that are lillywhite where our investments will get your approval?

17

McDonalds

18

everywhere i see mc donalds around the world i see the rise of diabetes

....i hope i don't catch any judgmental wrath for having their stock in my meager portfolio...

...i do patronize them however for their coffee in an otherwise coffeeless territory...& of course they, like kfc, always maintain clean western style bathrooms

...maybe their clean bathrooms & good example of proper hygeine in otherwise unhygenic countries cancels out their shortening life expectancies

19

Toche Germ, although I don't like eating at Mc Donalds and I don't have any stocks. I am sure by just existing I invest in some type of nastiness going on somewhere. I am taking shots at Solo's ability to laugh off the fact that his investments are directly promoting indentured servitude while at the same time berating travelers who are not sensitive to local economic issues. It is more sad than funny if you think of it. To say you know all you need to know about a country by the internet and stock portfolios is not only sad its ignorant.

Solo knows whats happening in Brazil but still tries to make money. I have seen first hand what Chiquita does and I would never ever invest in that company. Does this make me a better person. Probably not but it does make me less of a hypocrite.

Did you know they have Taco Bell in Mexico City?!!

20

Oh please Georgie

Dont preach to me....and yes, you offer no info at all on this forum 95% of the time, but hound me and my post.

What about the Nikes shoes you wear, the sweatshirt from India by Addidas, the bike you ride with parts from China? Are you sure your"investments" are so clean.

For the record, my original reference on the 1st post was half joking, as with the internet, you can gather all type of info to compare countries, and the info Germuno provided that I posted here from that 1st post was pretty everyday stuff and good advice, where is yours?

The fund I am invested in, all Bio Fuels, mainly USA and some Asian and South American interest.

I appreciated your article and link, but thats as far I need to explain anything. Should everyone with a investment in their portfolio or 401K in Emerging markets and Venture Capitol to the developing world pull out? The Japanese are building roads in Vietnam with women and children, and the Chinese have major contracts with Burma, where slave labor with women is commonly scene on the roadside. Do you really think there are rules and regulations in the developing world for the average worker, NO! They are happy to to have a job, provide for their family, and improve their lives, wages are all relative. I guess the guy that cleans your offices is a not a recent immigrant working 60 hours a week, and sending home 50% of his paycheck to family in Mexico, where they dont have shit.

21

Hey all I saying is do what you can where you can. You know your investment is actively promoting slavery like conditions but because you want the money and the honey you won't do anything about it. As far as your argument that they are happy to have a job only goes so far. I don't wear nikes and I just checked, the only thing I am wearing that is not made in the US is the Gap jeans I am wearing, made by children for children.

I don't understand how my posts on this site makes you any less of a hypocrite. Answer me that, will ya.

22

gotta quit agreeing like this ticotim...but you're right...he's being awfully damn preachy

...& i did see your intended humor as well... but then i probably know you a little better than jackson...

shades of the myanmar morality debate hey?

...my stocks are all mutual funds in any case..rarely look at what they pick for me..

.just look at that little shrinking figure at the bottom of the ledger every month...

23

I am not being preachy, all I said was Tim is a big fat hypocrite, thats all. Hey do what you want, I could care a less. Just don't tell me you support third world orphanages while your making most of your money from the textile industry. That is hypocrisy.

24

i f you are old enough to get a pensionado visa for panama, panama would be far cheaper than brazil.the
discounts for pensionados are written into panamanian law and are very generous e.g.25% off transportation

25

George

You really need to get off your high horse. Because I am a sales rep for a fashion designer in Italy, I am a hypocrite? Stop your personal attacks and stalking all my post- RomanB warned you!

What do you do for a living....nevermind, I dont want to know

26

I love people who try to intimidate people to bend to their whims because they they have annoited themselves a dogooder. If you are so concerned about it jacksongeorge why do you not go there and fight for their rights? Peace Corps sound good? Now, back to the dreary TRAVEL aspect of this website.

27

he warned US Tim. I am not stalking you. I am just pointing out when you talk about things you don't know about. It is a service to people who actually come here to get info. As far as being a do gooder. I would love to be a do gooder. I don't think that is a bad thing. And BTW, when something is said about me that I don't like or shows me in a bad light, I don't cry to the Mod' and have it erased which Tim does. I ain't into censorship. Tim if I were "stalking" you wouldn't I comment on more of the 100s the threads you contribute to everyday? Is it stalking you when I point out to the OP that you, who are giving advice, have never been to Brazil or Panama (except for Bocas Del Toro once for 3 days, years ago)?

28

George calling me names, and making misleading statements about me, and attacking a poster as you have on this thread, says it all.

Enough!

29

i can't believe somebody complaining to the moderator...too funny

...it's also funny how ticotim comments on places he's never been...

30

Where did I attack the OP?!

31

You attack me....

Look where this thread has gone, all thanks to you...

Germumo- How was VN man?

32

Oh boo-hoo tim. Why don't you complain and get it erased like all the other posts that you don't think makes you look good. I for one know a lot more about Curitibas than I ever would have before! Looks like a cool town and now I want to take that train. I am a train freak. How much is it? How far does it go? Are there other trains that go over night?

33

got back to the states last month ticotim..

..off to colombia within a month...just don't know how yet.

...but i'm in the states for my first superbowl in years...no dog in the fight...but sure look forward to the party.

no, that would be me issuing the warnings, Roman would probably have banned both of you by now :)

so can we get back to the topic, something about the cost of living... in some place... somewhere...
