bordercrossing in west mongolia to altai

Country forums / North-East Asia / Mongolia

Hello,
I need some information about cross the border in west-mongolia to altai in russia.
I want to start my trip in summer in Novosibirsk, going to Irkutsk, Lake Bajkal, going to ulanbator and travelling to west mongolia.
If I have a good russian visa, are there problems to cross the border there in the west to altai mountains in Siberia??
Which kind of travelling is in the border region possible??
My trip will end in Novosibirsk again for the flight home.

Thanks for answering!!
Mathias

Hi Mathias

It is possible to cross at the Mongolian/Tsagaan-Nuur to the Russian/Tashanta border crossing in west Mongolia in the Bayan Olgi province.
It will lead you to the Russian M52 road to Novosibirsk for your flight home.

At the border you will have to hire hitch across the border according to the Russian regulations.

Once in Russia, you are supposed to register in Gorni Altaisk.

As Dan says , russian border tashanta is open for tourist. the best way is to hire a private car or you can use a shared public taxies from ulgii center to kosh agash (kosh agash is the nearest russian town to border which is 150 km far from ulgii center).

You should know this that mostly there would be at least 6 to 7 people in a Public shared taxi (russian 4x4 UAZ). Which would cost about 10 times cheaper than a private car.

BTW you will; need to travel by bus or vehicle at least until you reach Barnaul or perhaps Biisk as there are no trains until these places. There is a daily train that operates between Barnaul and Novosibirsk.
