Booking hostels

Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula

Evening all,

I am travelling with my girlfriend to Singapore, Malaysia and Borneo for a month in July/August. Do you think we should book all of our hostels in advance or just a couple of nights after the flight and then play it by ear? We are a little concerned that everywhere maybe fully booked as it's peak season. We are also going to Thailand for a week for we have the same question for there. Any help or advice would be great!

Thanks.

I will play it by ear... nothing surpass the mobility one can have when nothing is planned to the details.

I agree with reply 1; overplanning really limits your mobility and options. Just go with it. I recently went to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and booked a hostel online. When I got there I realized that the place has many lodging options, many of better value than the one I'd committed myself to online. I won't do that again. I might book a single night on a late arrival just to have a place to stay but then get out next morning and find the best one. Keep your flexibility; don't overdo the planning in my humble opinion.

I'm living in Sing. but had some friends that had problems getting into a hostel a few weeks back on the weekend (not the CNY weekend).
