Booking a Mobile Safari in Botswana

Country forums / Africa / Botswana

In the past week, the ministry of tourism has decided to notify the public regarding future licensing of safari related businesses . This will effect many foreign owned and operated safari companies. Specifically, those that operate:

(a) guest houses (except corporate guest houses) A License
(b) mobile safaris C License
(c) motorboats F License
(d) tourist transfers E License
(e) camp and caravan sites A License
(f) mekoro H License

The above tourist enterprises are reserved for citizens of Botswana or companies which are wholly owned by citizens of Botswana.

How does this effect us? Before sending a deposit for services, you should confirm with any of these types of Botswana businesses they are licensed to operate (get a copy of the license) and be sure the expiration date is on it.

Something I wonder about. Will Botswana Citizens be able to continue to supply the quality mobile safaris that people demand?
Will many of the top foreign guides move on to other countries?

I have been reading about the possibility of this happening in the Ngami Times. It is a mind boggling proposal which raises so many questions.
What happens to the many, many foreign owned businesses already operating? Do they just pack up shop and put off their employees? Do they sell to Botswanan nationals - if they had the money wouldn't they already have the majority of safari operations? What happens to the huge number of potential tourists who have nowhere to book the various stays/activities with - national ownership is not going to just pick up where foreign have left off- that potential income may be lost altogether. Is the government going to asisst nationals in some way with investment/finance etc to get businesses up and running? I think it is an ill-thought out undertaking which is going to cost the country a lot of money and standing in the tourism industry.
