Birdwatching Namibia

Country forums / Africa / Namibia

Can anyone please recommend the most practical bird watchers guide to take on a trip to Namibia.

Robert's guide to the birds of Southern Africa was, and probably still is, the standard text but I believe it now weighs 5kg!

Hi,
There is a large bookstore in Windhoek.
You would be better of getting books, guides and maps there.

Newmans Birds of Southern Africa is good and doesn't weigh 5kg.

Where are you staying in namibia. Most decent lodges will have copious reference books. Many lodges, like Hobatere and Huab, have owners who are renowned birders and guides.

I have the "Sasol Birds of Southern Africa" and It's realy good. I bought it in a bookstore in Swakopmud.

It weigh 850g, has 440 pages, approximately 900 birds, with flight silouhettes of some birds.

I know that this book is using for the training of the Safari Field Guides.

I would recommend the Sasol bird book. It's portable, comprehensive and very user-friendly.

A friend raves about the Sasol bird guide iPhone app. It includes calls, which a book can only describe. The same app is also available on Blackberry and possibly other platforms too. I've never used it so can't comment personally.
