Birding trips to Celsestun and Chacahua

Country forums / Mexico / Mexico

Hello I am intersted in doing some birding trips to Celestun and Chacahua in December/January 2017/18. Can anyone recommend any local birders/companies , who provide guided birding trips to these regions.

Best regards Jens

I can not help with the 2 sites you mention but I have been to Calakmul Jaguars Preserve in Chiapas. In the couple hours I was there I stopped counting Ocellated Turkeys at 42, saw 2 Crested Guans, 1 Keel-Billed Toucan, 2 box turtles, 1 grey fox and maybe 10+ Howler Monkeys.

Hmm, I've been to both places, but did my birding on my own. If you just wanted a local fisherman to take you in his boat, you could arrange it locally, but if you want an English-speaking guide, better arrange in advance and take plenty of cash.

Another site I have been to is Ria Lagartos, besides the hundreds of flamingoes there were pink spoon bills, an eagle, pelicans, a raccoon and 2 crocs that we watched in the crystal clear waters.......

I was reminded while reading Birds & Birding in Central Oaxaca this morning that Roque Antonio of Teotitlan del Valle is quite a reputed birder and leads tours as well. Check online for contact info.

Ria Lagartos...there [was]...an eagle....

What kind of eagle did you see?

And Edgar del Valle organizes bird banding sessions in the Jardin Etnobotanico in Oaxaca on the last Sunday morning of each month, and may lead birding trips as well at other times.
