Bike Rentals Reykjavik Iceland

Country forums / Scandinavia & the Nordics / Iceland

Hello travelers,

I have been searching online to bike rental information in Reykjavik, Iceland- only one or two companies with websites, very expensive renting a touring bike for what I can find. Does anyone know any other options aside from the 2 popular ones found online? I am needing a touring bike for possibly 10 days to go around the island and camp. Any locals can guide me in the right direction? Thanks!!!

Hi, I know Bike Company, they know what they are doing. Here is their website : http://bikecompany.is/

The reason it is expensive is that there is a very short season for hiring bikes. Also Icelandic conditions are hard on bicycles, so they'd need a lot of maintenance, and/or not last very long.

The only half plausible bikes I can find for rental are these.

These are bikes that cost about £450 (before accessories) here in Britain, and I wouldn't really recommend the quality level you can get at those prices for use in Iceland. Though probably if you stick to tarmac and hire their trek ds you'd survive, if you could work out suitable luggage carrying arrangements.

You need a lot of luggage for cycling in Iceland, and I'd want front racks as well as rear for carrying all that clothing and camping equipment in chilly Iceland. Which I guess they aren't going to provide. Also distances can be long between food shops, and being prepared for the limited opening hours of shops in smaller places. Then you need to think about waterproof cycling panniers for carrying it (definitely don't ride with a big rucksack on your back).

People who go cycling in Iceland tend to be serious cyclists. It is tough riding in those strong winds, and with lots of luggage, even if many of the roads are pretty flat. Such serious cyclists tend to bring their own, as they wouldn't trust what you could hire. I only once met someone trying to do a tour on a hire bike. He didn't have camping equipment, and even then he was having problems with it falling apart underneath him.
