Best route from Vancouver to Haida Gwaii?

Greetings everyone,
So my friend from the US is coming up for a short while this summer and we were thinking about going to Haida Gwaii. She has never been to Canada before and I myself have only lived in Vancouver for 2 years, and haven't seen much outside of Vancouver. We have limited funds, but were thinking about renting a car (doubling as shelter potentially, depending on our funds). I recently visited the Keystone Hot Springs which were phenomenal and was thinking about taking the Sea-to-Sky highway from Van all the way to Prince Rupert, and passing through the hot springs, but I've never been Vancouver Island, and was wondering about that as a potential route. I'm just wondering which route the community would recommend best in terms of sights and interesting stops along the way. We're also looking for cool spots once we get to Haida Gwaii so any tips are welcome and appreciated!
