Country forums / South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula / Singapore

Hi All,
I am going to singapore for the first time and would like to know if I can buy an iPhone there as in India it seems costly so was wondering whts the price range if i buy it in Singapore ..and which is the best place where I can buy authentic phone...
Any information will be appreciated

Hi,

I know this is 100% relevant, but be careful!

My friend, from the UK, almost bought an official iPhone from HK, but was told it wouldn't work outside of HK or China. Apparently they have programmed software blocking devices so as people can't do what you're proposing. Maybe it is different in Singapore/ India, but just a word of warning. Thats all.

i was looking for one last month and it was about 800 USD at the airport. i didn't buy it so i can't comment on using it in different countries.

Thanks ...adkins ...i am aware of this issue but there are softwares which unblock the device and hence it can be used anywhere ...some of my friends have bought this in US and they are now using it ...here in india ...and thats why I wanted to know wht would be the price in Singapore and where can i buy it there ...but thanks anyway for that piece of information....and Moon ...would u be aware of places in singapore where I can buy it ...?

This might suggest some difficulties. http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/apple-halts-unauthorized-iphone-sales-in-singapore/12030

However I've heard that Singtel will be selling the Iphone starting in December, though these will likely be with a calling plan. Perhaps you could get one with a cheap plan.

Thanks Red...But the news is old ( from Dec 07 ) and I don't think there is any issue if I buy it in Singapore ....and then use it in Delhi...but I was wondering if Sim Lim square Shopping area is the main hub in Singapore to buy Phones ...even if its not iphone.

Yes Sim Lim Square is the place to get the best bargains for almost any sort of electronic items. prices are very competitive (many stores sell the same item) so it is possible to get a good price without any bargaining.

unless you are very savvy with electronics, knows the prices, I wouldn't recommend Sim Lim. Plenty of scams happened there.
I think Singtel put the price of about $1000 for iPhone 3Gs 16 GB model.

Raj,

You have been given a lot of wrong information. The unlocked iPhones in Singapore and HK work worldwide, there is no software blocking on them, and they will work out of the box on any network.

The prices are roughly $US700 for a 16GB 3GS, and $US800 for a 32GB.

Nowadays Singtel, M1 and Starhub are all selling contract-free iPhones. Prices change a bit, but they seem very reasonable. Also understand that the resale value on a factory unlocked iPhone is much greater than a software jailbroken/ unlocked SIM.

@ndut is right - SLS is full of scam artists, and unless you are very careful, stick to legit shops.
