Best Dive Site for one day in Sri Lanka

Interest forums / Diving & Snorkelling

Dear All,

I have one day to do some diving in Sri Lanka on the South Coast. I've been thinking Unawatuna, however, now I'm not sure. If you could recommend a one day trip please let me know. I have done about 15 dives in total, in Egypt and Australia previously, I have my PADI openwater licence. I'm happy to do wreck dives, but have not tried this before. I will be going in a couple of weeks (mid-March 2010).

Hope to hear soon
Thanks

D

In response to my own post, in case anyone else searches this in the future, I went with Seahorse Diving as they were in the LP guide. There are several diving establishments in Unawatuna. It cost €25 for the dive and I went out to Tango wreck which is 25m down. The visibility wasn't as bad as I seen on the net, it was clear and the wreck was good for a first time wreck dive. There were a lot of fish there, but this is not a comparison to Egypt or GBR for diving. If you want to check it out with medium expectations, then its a good one to have a look. Seahorse are nice and took me out even though I was the only one diving that morning. Its about 15 mins by boat out of the bay.

Unawatuna is beautiful. Clear blue sea, chilled atmosphere, some good party places on the beach that aren't too crowded but have a good vibe, a lot of locals rather than just foreign tourists.
