Bangkok Malls Christmas decorations - is it up ?

Which are the malls with decoration and the best ? Thank you.

some of us go to the far east to escape from this sort of thing

I'm also one that don't like Western holidays implemented in Thai malls. It is farang commercialization not Thai. Maybe Chan-o-cha can get rids of silly Santa hat.

My guess is Siam Paragon will have it up after 11.25.2016.

I'm waiting to ask the Minister about Christmas and New Year. I'm not clear what "celebrated in an appropriate manner" means

The Minister of Tourism told me that both Christmas & New Year Countdown will most certainly go ahead. But details have yet to be announced.

RESPONSE: Minister of Tourism told me there can be fireworks. It isn't banned. But it's up to the organizers of each event. Who will dare be first?

Since the last time I spoke to the Minister, CentralWorld cancelled Countdown & their big Christmas tree. She said she will speak to them.

i have to say that I have had some wonderful but unexpected Christmas's on my travels over the years.

In Chi Phat there is often a childrens party at Christmas and I remember in Pailin one year several children gave me Christmas cards - they were all the same as that was the only one in the market. I have also experienced Midnight Mass in Sapa when all the tribes people descended from the hills for the service - the first and only time I have been to church apart from weddings, christening and funerals

Thailand does commercialized Christmas quite well but many parts of India will surprise one-especially the south.

I recall a blue outfitted robotic Santa climbing a rope to Airport Plaza’s ceiling in Chiang Mai. It would descend to a stage with a shimmering Christmas tree, reindeer, sleigh and a couple downright hot Santa helper Mannequins. It was outstanding.

Indeed, there are those who believe shopping malls should be pure temples of western commercial culture, undiluted by western holiday culture. However, one wonders if the Thais care a fig about any of that. If it is all just mental constructs of westerners who obsess about culture and purity.?

Just to update. Was in Bangkok 10 days ago and see no christmas lighting decor from any mall at Siam Square. Told by the locals that it's not decided yet whether the malls will put up or not.

All very well updating but the info is 10 days out of date - Even in the west we sometimes wait until nearer christmas to turn on the lights and stick up the decorations

Anyway doubt that many readers are going to Thailand to seek out the Christmas decorations

Actually the 'tree' (the green stupa) would be up at Central World by now. However this being the year of the Kings death all celebrations have been toned down, from Loy Khratong, to Xmas. Unfortunatly OP this could be a down year for shopping mall Christmas decorations. These are indeed difficult days in which we find outselves.

bigal1, the far east have much better malls than most European cities.
Those who think Kuala Lumpur or Penang Malls are great are wrong. Their neighbours Bangkok, Singapore and Jakarta all have better malls. Malaysia is getting poor now due to heavy debts and foreign businesses prefer to go elsewhere.

As I said most of us do not come to the Far East to search out Christmas

Well certain parts I've visited in the last week seem totally bereft of the usual Christmas deccies. It seems a bit illogical to me as it really doesn't show disespect for a King but respect for a religious festival and event that is connected with "love & peace"

I received pictures today on my Facebook. Friends took them at Central World last night. The lighted trees looked like they might burn holes in your retina. Recommend you go at night, bring a good camera, and sunglasses. heh. Central world has more kilowatts arcing out than the Griswold Family house
