| jancadieux06:48 UTC13 Oct 2011 | Next week we're driving from Treviso to Ljubljana (1 night), Pecs (1 night), Budapest ( 5 nights) and then returning via Lake Balaton (1 night). I'd like to get off the main motorway if anyone has experience and suggestions?

Pecs itself is awesome. The town, the galleries it s setting with the Mecsek hills as backdrop The prettiest region by Balaton lake is around Bacsony on the north coast near the western end. Stay in the village of Szigliget than hike up to the volcanic Badacsony hill or the other volcanic hills behind (you can look for the blue trail). Szent Gyorgy hegy, another volcanic hill behind Badacsony is really nice too. It's the fastest to loop around the lake, heading down on the M7 motorway than backup on the north shore. Siofok is just a party town in the summer not that nice. Keszthely on the western tip is a nice town. If you have more time and you want to hit the prettiest spots than leave M7 at Szekesfehervar to road 8 and include the town of Veszprem for a short stopover than go down to Balaton to Balatonfured another pretty town but smaller than Veszprem, once there don't miss the nearby Tihany peninsula. Then you can head down to the Badacsony region. The Tihany peninsula is probably the most popular destination you can see the whole lake from the monanstery at the top and it is beautiful but my personal favorite is behind Badacsony hill. If you don't have time for this you can stop by Balatonfoldvar on the southcoast and try to find the lookoutplace near Kilato utca behind hotel neptun. You can also catch a glimpse of the lake from the highway from the Korishegy viadukt (suspension bridge), The view from Fonyod with Badacsony across the other shore is also nice.
