Aus in March/April

Interest forums / Older Travellers

I am taking my mum -75- from uk to aus for 4 weeks mid march to mid april 2008. She has a brother in Brisbane so will hang around this area for a few days but plan to go to Fraser Island, Noosa or some other places around the area - any suggestions? Would it be best to hire a car ?
Also what weather can we expect and will box jelly fish be a problem?
I then thought of flying to Adelaide and doing Kangeroo Island, then on to Alice Springs and Uluhru - I then thought of Darwin and Kakadu . However I am not sure if the weather will be too hot in Alice, too wet in Darwin !!!!!! Need quick answer as booking flights this week.
I was thinking of camping trips in Darwin and Alice as I have done these before with Adventure Tours and they were good and Mum is up for that [she is very fit and active]- but now wonder if it is going to be so hot we need hotels with pools ?

Help please !!!!!
Any other suggestions /changes of itinery considered. Would west coast be a better option ?

The weather will be very hot aboutt 40C in alice and sticky in Darwin. I have lived there and suggest airconditioning at that time of year. Also in the wet season a lot of the roads are closed and camping very limitied. I now live in Hervey Bay which is the jumping off point for fraser island. Box jelly fish should not be a problem in general but if you are intending to be here over easter Fraser is a mad house so come at some other time if you can. PM me and I will help with your plans. I can provide you details of all the local tours to fraser. I emigratred from Britain in 1971 and live in a retirement vvillage in Hervey Bay. Kangaroo island is very good for seeing aussie animals I agree. By the way tiger airways (subsiduary of singapore airlines) is now flying to alice and darwin from melbourne at very cheap prices. Have a look at their website. They also fly into perth and darwin from singapore. Virginblue and jetstar also fly directly to hervey bay for fraser island from sydney. Looking forward to hearing from you.

The west coast is very beautiful but most of the kimberleys are closed in the wet season.

To be honest I think the temperatures in the centre in March would be too much for me in march - and I am a fair bit younger than your mother. Remember too it will take a few days for her to get over the jet lag!

A few years ago, we went to Australia for 3 weeks in April. We started in Sydney (where we have family), then travelled up to Noosa and Byron Bay. Weather at both places was wonderful. We then flew to Darwin and took a 3 or 4 day trip from there to Kakadu, etc. It was very hot and humid in Darwin, but no rain. We were very glad to have A/C when we were in the city, but to be honest, I can't recall if we had it when we were on our trip out to Kakadu. Then we were back in Sydney for a couple of days. We left Sydney and flew home via Hong Kong.

We originally planned to go to Australia in March, but had to change our plans due to my work schedule. When we thought we'd go in March, we were going to go to Tasmania. We decided not to go to Tasmania when we had to change our plans and go in April. Tasmania in April seemed too much like Toronto in April! But it meant we could go instead to Darwin, so we were happy with our choice.

It wasn't our first trip to Australia. We had already spent a lot of time in Sydney on a previous trip, also up to Cairns and the GBR.
