Aus in March/AprilInterest forums / Older Travellers
I am taking my mum -75- from uk to aus for 4 weeks mid march to mid april 2008. She has a brother in Brisbane so will hang around this area for a few days but plan to go to Fraser Island, Noosa or some other places around the area - any suggestions? Would it be best to hire a car ?
The weather will be very hot aboutt 40C in alice and sticky in Darwin. I have lived there and suggest airconditioning at that time of year. Also in the wet season a lot of the roads are closed and camping very limitied. I now live in Hervey Bay which is the jumping off point for fraser island. Box jelly fish should not be a problem in general but if you are intending to be here over easter Fraser is a mad house so come at some other time if you can. PM me and I will help with your plans. I can provide you details of all the local tours to fraser. I emigratred from Britain in 1971 and live in a retirement vvillage in Hervey Bay. Kangaroo island is very good for seeing aussie animals I agree. By the way tiger airways (subsiduary of singapore airlines) is now flying to alice and darwin from melbourne at very cheap prices. Have a look at their website. They also fly into perth and darwin from singapore. Virginblue and jetstar also fly directly to hervey bay for fraser island from sydney. Looking forward to hearing from you. | 1
The west coast is very beautiful but most of the kimberleys are closed in the wet season. | 2
To be honest I think the temperatures in the centre in March would be too much for me in march - and I am a fair bit younger than your mother. Remember too it will take a few days for her to get over the jet lag! | 3
A few years ago, we went to Australia for 3 weeks in April. We started in Sydney (where we have family), then travelled up to Noosa and Byron Bay. Weather at both places was wonderful. We then flew to Darwin and took a 3 or 4 day trip from there to Kakadu, etc. It was very hot and humid in Darwin, but no rain. We were very glad to have A/C when we were in the city, but to be honest, I can't recall if we had it when we were on our trip out to Kakadu. Then we were back in Sydney for a couple of days. We left Sydney and flew home via Hong Kong. | 4
