armed forces day santiago

Country forums / South America / Chile

I will be in santiago on sept 19th, which is armed forces day, is this a dangerous time for a UK citizem to be in the area? I have read it can involve civil disturbances

The last years this day has been pretty quiet, pretty much just a big military parade in Parque O'Higggins.

There is no particular danger for a UK citizen at this or any other time.

The friction re the British holding and later releasing Pinochet has long since been forgotten by people on either side of the argument.

Its not a problem people will still be hung over from the 4 day Sept 11 national holiday ;)

Actually Sept 11 hasn't been a holiday here since I think 2005. There was a tradition of some small disturbances on this day and they haven't completely disappeared even yet.

The big party time here of course is the dieciocho..Sept 18 and this carries on into Sept 19 as well.

This year the 18th and 19th fall in the middle of the week and I am sure lots of people will try to make the whole week into a party.

YOU MUST TRY both grape and apple chicha direct from the barrel. Have fun! And remember, it was Chile who "helped" the UK during the Falklands. Don't recall any reports and have never seen any violent protests on the 19th in my five dieciocho-nueve celebrations here. Well definitely alcohol related crime or stupidity but that's a given.

Hi Jasmine, i am also arriving in Santiago on September 18 from Houston Texas U.S. early in the morning and it will be my first time in Santiago, I have a friend whom I called cousin in Puerto Montt but she wont'n be in Santiago until saturday, so we can unite our forces and escape the disturbances safe somewhere in town, I have a lot of good input from different sources and intell is telling me it will be very safe.

Opps sorry the 18th holiday not the 11th.

Santiago turns into a ghost town during the 18th-19th long weekend...so nothing to worry about.

If you are feeling lonely, head to Flanningans (Geo Pub)...youll meet loads of fellow "gringos". Its on the street Encomenderos, metro station Tobalaba

Jasmine, it's not the armed forces day (this day doesn't exist in Chile), it's the Army day.
If you like parades or just want to watch the people cheering the troops, go to Las Condes (Metro El Golf) at six. If you are lucky you can find a seat.
18 and 19 is a national feast here and i've never ever seen any disturbances that week, not even in much more dangerous years. Everybody is happy (and most are drunk) and there is no problem at all. Sunny and warm days and kites everywhere!
Last year I went to Parque Intercomunal, where you can spend a nice time. Rodeo, country games, huasos and gauchos from Chile, Brazil, Peru and Argentina, Chilean folk music and food... Do you know the Rural in Buenos Aires? Well, something like that.
