Anyone was in Laos in March?

Country forums / South-East Asia Mainland / Laos

Hi everybody!
Me and my wife are planning to visit Cambodia (1 week) and Laos (3 weeks) in March 2013. We have read on some tourist guides, LP included, that March does not seem to be the best month to go there. We are concerned in particular with the heat in the south (especially 4000 islands) and with the "cut and burn" agriculture done by the farmers in the north areas. Did anyone visit Laos in March? How was your experience? Do you suggest us to change our destination? (we have now just booked the tickets till BKK, so we can eventually go to another part of the region)
Thanks for your help!
Cheers

It can get a bit warm, and a bit smoky, too.

But it is only a deal if you have issues with normal tropical heat or asthma/respiratory issues (or those who like sharp long-distance photographs).

If you have lots of flexibility as to when to visit, I'll agree that October through January is the best time to travel here, but Laos is special all year around, and in the heat and smoke still beats being most anywhere else anytime...

Been to Laos several times in March and live in north Thailand. March just happens to be when cool season turns into hot season before rainy season and farmers are finishing up clearing their fields (burning). It can be bad or barely noticeable depending on how recently/locally any burning has taken place and if there has been any rain or wind. Plenty of tourists still go in March so it apparently doesn't put off too many visitors.

Thanks a lot for your quick and useful reply! I'd like to ask you for another advice: I was thinking to do an itinerary from Cambodia to Laos (Siem Peap, Phnom Phen, Kratie, 4000 islands, Tha Kaek, Vientiane, Luan Prabang then back to Thailand), given the risk to find bad air condition in the North, is it better if we make the other way round itinerary (starting from Vientiane and finishing in Siem Reap)?
Thanks in advance,
cheers
