Annapurna Panorama (Poon Hill) Trek

I'll be in Nepal for a couple months for fieldwork, and a friend is coming at the end of my trip to do a short trek (5-6 days). We were thinking of doing the Annapurna Panorama trek featured in the Lonely Planet guide, starting in Naya Pul and going through Tikhedhunga, Ghorepani, Tadapani, Ghandruk, and ending in Kimche. I'd love to hear about anyone else's experiences on this route, average costs, recommendations for travel to/from Kathmandu & Pokhara, and to/from Pokhara and Naya Pul. Also, any recommendations for activities/sights in Pokhara for a day?

Hi Maureen,

I trekked part of that route in March. My costs averaged USD 27 per day for food and accommodation. That doesn't include alcohol but does include many liters of tea and normally a mars bar in the afternoon. The route is scenic and well worth doing but sooner rather than later as road building is destroying the trail at a rapid pace. When I came by the road crew was just getting ready to dig up part of the stairs to Ulleri and I imagine that by now the road extends to that town. On the other side of the trek, the road now has almost reached Ghandrukbut as I understand it traffic only reaches Kimche so far.
To get to the start of your trek a regular tourist bus from Kathmandu to Pokhara costs NRP 800 and takes most of the day. A taxi from Pokhara to Nayapul will set you back around NRP1500

It is an extremely touristy area. Don't expect 'authentic Nepal' there.

Near Kathmandu you can do a short trek on the rim of the Kathmandu valley Chisopani Nagarkot Dhulikhel Panauti. Or for real mountain villages, Helambu, 5 or 6 days (the Helambu trek will show you the extent of the earthquake damage).

What you choose is completely touristic trekking trail in Nepal especially Chinese tourist but beautiful trek. About the cost to go Pokhara is depended on how you like to spend 7 to 22$ per pax and from Pokhara to Nayapul if you like to go by Taxi need to pay around 15 to 20$ and if you are looking for another trek for same days you can try Langtang valley trek, Helambu trek, or Kathmandu rim valley trek to.
