Americans traveling to Morocco in MayCountry forums / Africa / Morocco
Hello Travelers, | ||
...... from my experience of Morocccans.... they'll have the utmost sympathy for you, some might offer you sanctuary in their home. P.S. hopefully by May.... Donald will have been fired. | 1
I doubt that anyone will be too worked up at you personally. Morocco didn't make the Trump-List: Iraq, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya and Somalia (although I can think of several more hell holes which should have been on that list). In any case, they'll like your US dollars...everyone does. | 2
Moroccans generally assume that foreign toursits are French, Spanish, English, or from other European countries anyway because that is where most of their visitors come from. Unless you strike up a conversation with a local and tell them where you are from, they won't know the difference from appearances alone unless you wear your "Make America Great Again" hat ;) But in my experience in the country, they are easily able to separate a country's politics from the average citizen's personal views and not assume that they are the same. After all, you traveled to a Muslim country and they will generally give you credit for that. Politics aside, expect some loud and forward behavior from shopkeepers if you stroll through markets, as salesmen can get a bit aggressive while trying to sell their stuff. Don't assume that this behavior is targeted just at you, and don't assume that it is related to politics. They are just aggressive and somewhat loud in their desire to make money. But Morocco is amazing, and you'll have a great trip! | 3
Everything will be fine, don't worry, they are not stupid. Politics and people are not the same things. Michel | 4
I will say also it is not to be worried about, all they in Morocco know how "happy" the US people are for theirs new president. I hope like moroccotraveler, "hopefully by May.... Donald will have been fired" | 5
I would not go by that 7 member list - given this administration and their MO, that can be edited anytime. I hope you do strike up conversations with locals so you can experience their warmth and hospitality. Most people as above posters state, do not equate the average tourist with politics. The most hassle you can expect is to buy souvenirs or tours or the like. | 6
